History of FUMNHS High School Batch '97

During the vibrant era of the 1980s, characterized by disco beats and societal change, high school life at Florencio Urot Memorial National High School (FUMNHS) was an experience that defined a generation. As a student in the secondary department during this transformative time, every day was a journey marked by academic growth, camaraderie, and a blend of challenges and triumphs.

The journey began as freshmen, navigating a new world, desperately trying to make friends. The first day at FUMNHS was nerve-wracking, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, a new environment, and a new attitude. Introducing oneself in front of new classmates became a rite of passage.

Surviving a school year in the 90s was no easy feat, marked by happy and challenging days. Girls wore above-the-knee school uniforms while bell-bottoms were very popular, and shirts were worn tight for the boys. Laughter echoed through classrooms, and tiredness was met with resilience and an unwavering spirit to make the most of every moment. Time slipped away unnoticed, culminating in another school year full of cherished memories.

During those days, the mere mention of sending a misbehaving student to the principal's or guidance counselor's office was enough to make most students behave properly. Everyone was willing to clean classrooms, shop rooms, and make the floors shine. Respect for teachers and friendly relationships among students were common. In an era without gadgets, or Wi-Fi, attention and energy were directed towards enriching extracurricular activities such as sports, scouting, Sing-Out Club, rondalla, college band, and dance troupe.

In their senior year, all the boys were required to attend Citizens Army Training (CAT) and the girls had to attend Women's Auxiliary Service (WAS). Both programs included rigorous drills, military-style uniforms, and were led by their Corps Commanders Piquero and Sir Derasin. Despite the exhausting nature of the training, which involved carrying heavy wooden rifles and marching under the sun every Saturday, they all looked forward to it because it instilled discipline, obedience, and respect for authority.

In 1997, high school students were required to take the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) if they wished to enroll in college. Passing it was an extraordinary achievement for this cohort, marking the difference between pursuing a degree program or settling for vocational courses. The NCEE was a defining moment that not only marked their accomplishment but also set the course for their future. For those who didn't pass, they were able to pursue vocational courses and add another valuable skill to their repertoire. In essence, the NCEE opened doors and paved the way for a brighter tomorrow, and they were ready to take on the world with confidence.

One of the most eagerly anticipated events in high school is the JS Prom. It's a night filled with joy, dancing, and bonding with friends. "Saturday Night Fever," "How Deep is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive," “Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko,” Rock, Baby Rock,” “Annie Batungbakal,” and many more.

The vibrant atmosphere of FUMNHS HS Batch '97 was further embellished by the presence of its class muses, who not only exuded charm but also embodied grace and intellect. Each one possessed a unique blend of beauty and inner strength that made them stand out within the school community. heir presence added a touch of glamour to the halls of FUMNHS, making them beloved figures among classmates and teachers alike.

During their senior year, the FUMNHS High School Batch of 1997 achieved notable academic distinctions. The batch proudly celebrated the achievements of their graduates who received honors among the boys and girls.
